Our Mission

Pet Partners® of Central New York is a dedicated group of individuals and  registered Therapy Animal Teams committed to promoting the enrichment and enhancement of lives through the human-animal bond. This is accomplished through Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAA/AAT) designed to meet the needs of individuals of all ages and abilities.

Established in 2005, Pet Partners® of Central New York is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization that helps people live healthier and happier lives through the use of therapy animals. This is  done by trained volunteers who have been screened along with their pets to provide Animal Assisted Activities(AAA) and Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) in a variety of settings.  We are a  registered Community Partner of Pet Partners® , located in Bellevue, Washington.  A Community Partner is a group of registered Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program volunteers that serve a specific geographic area or facility who are interested in a closer, more collaborative relationship with the national organization.

We are not a service dog organization nor do we train animals.

Pet Partners is the national leader in demonstrating and promoting animal-assisted therapy, activities and education. Pet Partners is the nation’s largest and most prestigious nonprofit registering handlers of multiple species as volunteer teams providing animal-assisted interventions.

Pet Partners teams interact with a wide variety of clients including veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, people with intellectual disabilities and those approaching end of life.  The impact of these interactions is felt one million times a year.  Pet Partners’ curriculum and continuing education for licensed Instructors, Evaluators and Handlers is the gold standard in the field.

Additionally, Pet Partners offers superior risk management and industry safety standards, continuing education and re-registration for teams and keen attention to dealing with our unique multi-species team population.

People and animal volunteer teams are the heart and soul of Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program.

We train volunteers and evaluate them with their pets so they can visit patients in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice, schools, libraries and many other facilities. The time commitment and schedule for visits is coordinated directly by you with the facility you visit.

As a nationally recognized Pet Partner Animal Therapy Team, you have the freedom to choose when and where to volunteer - nationwide.

Registered Pet Partners are covered by a $2,000,000 commercial general liability insurance when they are doing volunteer work and acting within the scope of duties for a Pet Partners volunteer.

The underlying theme here is freedom. Freedom to go where you and your pet are comfortable - no matter where you live - with the security of having support from a national organization and its local affiliate.

Pet Partners is the leader among therapy animal programs nationally for decades. Our commitment to safety and animal welfare as well as education has translated into a reputation for the most professional therapy team handlers available. The new Read With Me initiative is no exception. The Read With Me program promotes literacy, education and the love of reading through visits with a Pet Partner therapy animal.

Therapy animals aren’t just dogs.  Cats, horses, rabbits, pigs, birds, llamas and alpacas, guinea pigs and even rats are eligible for evaluation through the Pet Partners program.

What is Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT)?

Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) are basically the casual "meet and greet" activities that involve pets visiting people. The same activity can be repeated with many people, unlike a therapy program that is tailored to a particular person or medical condition.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention directed and/or delivered by a health/human service professional with specialized expertise, and within the scope of practice of his/her profession. An example would be you and your pet volunteering under the direction of a physical therapist. You could do the same activities as you would when involved in AAA but the therapist could have specific activities designed to aid in the physical rehabilitation of a client. AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning.
